When people think of 30A activities, images of white sand and turquoise water flood the mind.  However, there is plenty more to do off the beach. The location offers a number of areas for hiking, biking and bird watching that afford visitors and locals access to unique habitats, neighborhoods, and state parks.  Two popular trails are the Timpoochee Trail and the Point Washington State Forest trail system.

30A Activites: Hiking and Biking

The Timpoochee Trail, named after an important Euchee Indian Chief, parallels 30A from Dune Allen to Inlet Beach.  The 18.6 mile paved stretch navigates through unique neighborhoods, beautiful beach access points, stunning coastal dune lakes and state parks.  Easy enough for people of all ages, the trail provides a great way to get outdoors, exercise and experience the many features that make 30A unique.  The path is shared by pedestrians and cyclists.  Bike rentals are easy to find throughout 30A and offer a range of different options from fat tire bikes to bike trailers for the youngest bike enthusiasts.

For the more adventurous, the Point Washington State Forest provides miles to explore on foot or by bike.  The Eastern Lake Trail System, the first trail established in the forest, consists of three double-track loop trails. The hiker or bicyclist can travel the 3.5, 5 or 10-mile loops. The trail system can be accessed at the parking lot and trailhead on County Road 395.

In addition, a greenway trail system that crosses the forest is being developed. This trail will provide connections to Grayton Beach State Park, Deer Lake State Park, Topsail Hill State Preserve, and numerous residential developments. Upon completion, this trail system will provide over 27 miles of trails for even more 30A activities.

30A Activities: Birding

Many of these areas are part of the Great Florida Birding Trail. Some of the bird species found in this area include southeastern American kestrel, myrtle warbler, prothonotary warbler, red-headed woodpecker, mourning dove, and ground dove.  And of course, local seabirds include pelicans, terns, gulls, herons, osprey, and bald eagles just to name a few.

There are so many amazing 30A activities.  Hiking, biking and birding are just a few of the ways to get outside and enjoy this beautiful area.
